Just wondering if anyone is using craigslist to advertise their handyman business and if so how is it working out for you?

I post a craigslist ad about every two weeks. I include the fact that we are members of the better business bureau. I also include our logo, and our flyer. I dont get to many calls. The ones I do get are people who want to pay minimum wage for jobs like installing all new crown molding, repainting entire house, or replacing water heaters. We are all in this to make a living and we dont work for free. When someone wants me to install a 50 Gallon Water Heater for $75.00, I tell them I am sorry but I cant. I have gotten one job that the owner of a house had a lot of work and still continues today giving me a good amount of work. For free advertising you cant beat it. Post it in the real estate ads as well.
I use craiglist every week or so I post an ad. Its free and I have gotten jobs out there. I mainly use it to promote and send people to my website and let my site do the selling. I have gotten jobs from it and use an ad similiar to Travis ad he uses. There are a lot of people price shopping on there you will get a lot of crap (at least I do) then there are the people lookin for a 10 an hour handyman. Some are truly looking for someone that does good work and are willing to pay for it. Its worth the time to post it and get your name out there.
I haven’t posted craigslist ads in quite some time because I’ve been busy enough without it but I do agree with cbmhandyman and dwj469. A lot of the people who contact you from craigslist are definitely looking for cheap rates. Not all though.
One of my best (most profitable) customers found me on craigslist.
Craigslist is good when you need work ASAP. You might not be able to charge your normal rate but if you are in a slump it can get you out. I always recommend that new handymen start by posting ads on craigslist. They can get work instantly and ease up on posting ads after they have a customer base.
I use craiglist. I use it and send them to my website and let the site do the selling since they are already on the net its easy to just click and go. Its free and I have gotten jobs from it. I have also gotten a lot of people that want to pay the handyman 10 dollars an hour. I say sorry hire your kids neighbor. I won’t do it. There are a lot of bottom feeders on craigslist, a lot of crooks, hacks, scammers and I am not only talking about people posting the ads.as I said its worth it. If you can weed through the garbage you will get jobs. I do.
Good luck
My helper will post on craigslist once or twice a week to get us more jobs where I can use him more often. We don’t get that many calls. I’ve had a better response at times but sometimes…nothing. The best source I’ve found are real estate people. If they like your service to their clients, they actually brag about the great handyman they have and word spreads around the office.
I have posted ads on Craig’s List off and on for a couple of months. I have had only one response and that person wanted an estimate to paint a house that was 1200 square feet. He wouldn’t tell me if the colors were the same, if trim was to be painted, condition of walls, or height of walls. He was clearly price shopping. I simply told him that I could not give him an accurate estimate based on the information he gave me. So, I too agree with cbmhandyman, Travis, and dwj469.
